Austin-based Depression Counseling
When you’re feeling really down, just getting out of bed and making it to work may seem impossible. Accomplishing simple, everyday tasks may require an enormous amount of strength and effort. You may feel depleted, like nothing matters. Aspects of your life that you used to care about may have lost their meaning.
It may feel like you’re the only person who has ever felt this overwhelmed, this alone, this hopeless…but the truth is that many others have experienced what you’re going through. Depression counseling can help you work through these difficult feelings and find a light at the end of the tunnel.
Experiencing signs of depression does not mean that you are “too sensitive”, “weak-willed”, or “need to toughen up”. Research indicates that depression is caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors, and often goes hand-in-hand with other chronic conditions. It can crop up during or after painful life changes such as illness, the death of a loved one, or job loss. Transitions can be complicated, and depression may also appear when positive changes occur, such as a marriage or the birth of a child.
If there is a history of depression in your family you may be more likely to suffer from it at some point in your life. Some symptoms of depression can include:
- Recurrent sadness, anxiety, and an “empty feeling”
- Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
- Increased irritability
- Loss of interest in hobbies and activities
- Difficulty concentrating
- Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
- Loss or increase of appetite
- Thoughts of death or suicide
- Physical aches and pains
